Map showing the network of stations established from September 1962 to June 1964, during the Southwest Pacific Survey conducted by the United States Air Force, 1370th Photo-mapping Wing. The aim of that survey was to establish the principal islands of the Southwest Pacific area on a common geodetic datum including connecting New Guinea and the adjacent islands to the geodetic network on the mainland of Australia. The project was accomplished by aerial electronic survey, specifically HIRAN (HIgh-precision shoRAN). 1962-64 : Aerial Survey Team (AST)-7, Net Communication Station (NCS) not far from Jackson Field Port Morseby, that was the radio hub for all ground stations. The sign over the door is enlarged as an insert and APCS stands for Air Photographic and Charting Service and MATS the Military Air Transport Service. Map showing the location, with yellow pin, of Station 37, named SEPIK HIRAN, at 10,250ft on the Hindenburg Range in PNG. 1963 : HIRAN Station description for Station 37, SEPIK HIRAN. Map showing the location of Station 37, SEPIK HIRAN, at 10,250ft on the Hindenburg Range in relation to Telefomin and Tifalmin. The Tifalmin airstrip is highlighted by the white rectangle. 1963 : Aerial photograph of Station 37, SEPIK HIRAN. 1963 : Aerial photograph of Station 37, SEPIK HIRAN. March 1964 : Papuan Air Transport (PATAIR) DC3 (VH-PNA) at Telefomin to transport equipment from Station 37 back to Port Morseby. Due to the short length of the airfield the DC3 was equipped with JATO (Jet-Assisted Take Off) bottles. March 1964 : Native porters and locals at Telefomin with some of the equipment from Station 37 ready for loading. The refrigerator ran on kerosene and evey HIRAN ground station had one. March 1964 : Loading the Papuan Air Transport (PATAIR) DC3 (VH-PNA) at Telefomin with equipment from Station 37. March 1964 : Station 37 equipment now loaded onto the DC3. Sections of the HIRAN aerial can be clearly seen. March 1964 : Native porters and curious locals at Telefomin. 1963 : Aerial photograph of Station 22, named MYOLA, on Mount Kenevi. Mt Kevevi was also occupied by Nat Map during the geodetic survey of PNG. July 1963 : Station 22, named MYOLA, on Mount Kenevi, showing the HIRAN aerial and associated camp. This photo was taken by HA Johnson during the Nat Map geodetic survey of PNG. javascript lightbox gallery by VisualLightBox.com v5.6
